It was the decade when the industry rediscovered muscle cars, experimented with turbocharging, introduced vehicles with fuel injection, and began utilizing all-wheel drive. In the 1980s, foreign carmakers grabbed significant market share in the United States, pushing one automaker, Chrysler, to the brink of bankruptcy.
